There was a trace of some-thing in President Harper which let loose power-ful affinities between men and their wealth, andled them to form new and unsellish affinities :which made soluble minds and hearts that hadnever before yielded to. high appeal. Ihis isnot demeaning his personal qualities : it is onlysaying that there was a trace of something addedto those qualities which can be analyzed and as-sessed and catalogued. Though President Harpers wisdom in certainaspects came out of the East, he was in spirit uWestlander. He did what seemed impossibleto do, anil what would have been impossible todo in the bonds of conventionalism and tradi-tionalism.
