Notes: This audited draft was issued in Houston by the Republic of Texas. Houston was established in 1836 to replace Harrisburg, which had been burned by Santa Anna. Named after Sam Houston, it was the seat of government from April 19, 1837, to January 18, 1840. Decorative designs border each edge of the note. The abbreviation No. is printed in the upper-left corner of the note; the number 1940 is handwritten adjacent to it. A dollar sign is printed in the upper-right corner; the amount 20,00 is handwritten adjacent to it. The note is signed on the recto by John Wyatt Moody, Auditor (TARO). Moody was the auditor for the Provisional Government of Texas and later for the Republic (TARO and Texas History Page).
