Summary

Description
English: Remnants of oyster farming 'claires' or 'channels' at Gwawley Bay, NSW (photo. T.C. Roughley, May 1921) This image originally appeared in a government publication, 'Oyster Culture on the Georges River, New South Wales', by T.C. Roughley (1922). The 'claires' were dug for prominent landowner and politician, Thomas Holt, as part of an early oyster farming venture, which attempted to emulate a method used in the French oyster industry. The low-lying land, probably originally a salt marsh, was privately owned, as was the waterway Gwawley Bay. The area shown eventually became part of the canal estate, Sylvania Waters, in the 1960s. The original caption at source reads, "Fig. 2 - Present-day view of the channels or claires constructed about 1870. These were abandoned after a trial extending over two or three years." Elsewhere in the publication, the author states that he took the photographs in April and May of 1921.
