Toile; hauteur vingt-neuf pouces, largeur vingt-quatre pouces trois lignes. cette tête sur laquelle ne tombe que peu de jour, et qu'environnent de grandes ombres, n'a point ce brillant qui fait une vive impression sur la vue. Mais elle est remarquable par cette profondeur, cette fusion de teintes harmonieuses et transparentes par cette magie, pour m'exprimer suivant l'usage, que le célèbre Rembrandt découvrit le premier dans les couleurs de sa palette, et qui est encore un secret pour beaucoup de peintres d'un grand mérite. Ajoutons à cette qualité une exécutions large, un modelé savant, et nous n'aurons rien dit de trop à l'éloge de ce portrait. On croit que c'est celui du père de Rembrandt. Sa tête est nue, son visage, vu trois quarts, est caractérisé par des traits fortements prononcées, son expression, d'accord avec de son vêtement, indique un homme du commun.’)
