Stema comunei Petelea, potrivit anexei nr. 1.1, se compune dintr-un scut triunghiular albastru cu marginile rotunjite, împărțit în pal de aur încărcat cu un mesteacăn smuls, în culoare naturală.

În partea dreaptă se află două monede de argint, dispuse în pal, reproducând monedele antice "tip Petelea": cea de sus, aversul, cu capul zeiței Artemis Tauropolos stilizat, privind spre stânga, și cea de jos, reversul, cu un călăreț stilizat, orientat spre dreapta. În partea stângă se află un jgheab asuprind o roată de moară de apă, văzută din semiprofil, ambele de argint. Scutul este timbrat de o coroană murală de argint cu un turn crenelat.

Semnificațiile elementelor însumate:

Mesteacănul (Betula pendula) reprezintă flora locală, făcând aluzie la originea toponimului comunei Petelea (Pytulia - Betulia, Birk), iar fondul de aur - culturile cerealiere. Monedele de argint antice tip Petelea - tipologie unică în țară - reprezintă valorile patrimoniale, tezaurul descoperit în comună. Roata de moară cu jgheab evocă morăritul tradițional și moara în care a fost găzduit Mihai Eminescu la Petelea, popasul inspirându-i secvențe și personaje în romanul "Geniu pustiu". Coroana murală cu un turn crenelat semnifică faptul că localitatea are rangul de comună.
