Description U.S. Navy members of "Operation Deep Freeze '61" mak adjustments to a "Grasshopper" automatic weather station near Beardmore Glacier, Antarctica, circa 1961.
In the background is a Douglas R4D-8L Skytrain (BuNo 17219) of Antarctic Development Squadron 6 (VX-6). This aircraft had been damaged on 25 November 1960 while landing on rough snow surface in the Horlick Mountains of Antarctica and had suffered serious landing gear damage. It flew back to Williams Field at McMurdo Station where it was loaded on a ship and sent to the U.S. for repair. It was back in Antarctica in 1961 but damaged beyond repair during a landing in the Sentinel Range, Antarctica, on 12 November 1961. The left landing gear collapsed during rollout after the landing, resulting in substantial damage to the aircraft. Because of the remote location, the aircraft was declared not salveageable on 24 November 1961.
