Diagram of British QF 3 inch Shrapnel Shell Mk I with tracer, 1914.
Intended for anti-aircraft use with QF 3 inch 20 cwt anti-aircraft gun.
The day tracer liquid is a mixture of turpentine and aniline dye. An optional external night tracer may be screwed into the base.
The shell is of forged steel, in 2 parts screwed together, with a set screw to prevent unscrewing.
Contains approximately 79 bullets, 41/lb. Bursting charge is 1 1/4 oz F.G. powder. The provision for the night tracer limited available space and weight for bullets.
Shell weight 12 1/2 lb. Total round weight 20 lb 11 oz 14 drams.

Mk II shrapnel shell omitted provision for the night tracer and hence had room for 83 bullets.
