Work Unit Conservationist J.C. Butler is seen in a field of crimson clover on the farm of Dr. J.C. Thomas. Crimson clover is one of many cover crops planted to prevent soil erosion, improve soil’s physical and biological properties, supply nutrients, suppress weeds, improve the availability of soil water, and break pest cycles along with various other benefits. Photograph taken by Leon J. Sisk for the USDA Soil Conservation Service, now known as the Natural Resources Conservation Service.
