English: This image shows plugs of "caprock" of the Paradox Formation exposed at the type location, Paradox, Colorado. The Paradox Formation is Pennsylvaniani n age and is mostly evaporites (salt and gypsum) that form "salt walls" rising towards the surface. Where these punch through the surface rocks, the salt is rapidly dissolved away, leaving a mixture of residual gypsum, limestone, and shale fragments called caprock. The Paradox Formation is responsible for the phenomenon of salt valleys in eastern Utah and western Colorado on the Colorado Plateau. |
