The church was built from 1614 to 1617 in the old pueblo of Massi, damaged by an earthquake in 1721 and later restored. It is one of the oldest to be intact in Cagayan Valley because it is supposed to be earthquake-proof having been built on top of a solid rock with a diameter of 1 to 2 kilometers below the ground.
