The story goes that while lie was imprisoned in the Towerhe was ore day cooking his dinner, when lie observed that the lidof the pot was repeatedly forced upwards by the vapour of theboiling water. It occurred to him that the same power whichraised the pots lid might be applied to other uses. On recoveringhis liberty he set to work to test his idea by experiments, whichproved perfectly succes ful. According to other accounts, theMarquis owed his first idea of steam force to the unfortunate DeCaus, whom he found among the lunatics in the Bicetre, whither hehad been sent by Cardinal Richelieu for pertinaciously hauntinghim with his invention. Allowing this account to be true, theMarquis has still the merit of first demonstrating how the agency ofsteam could be used for mechanical purposes.
