Description

I photographed this little "undertaker" on a white background just for the effect.

This Hairy Burying Beetle (Necrophorus tomentosus) gets its name from the fact that it lays its eggs in carrion and then digs underneath the dead animal until it sinks below ground. I found this one in a dead shrew that the neighbor's cat left in my garden.

Much to my disgust I discovered that, in defense, this insect regurgitates its last meal when alarmed. peweeeeee! It is very nimble and hates to be photographed. It flew away shortly after I snapped only a few shots.
