DescriptionMural on south side of Sovereign Hotel in Portland (2017).jpg
The former Sovereign Hotel, in Portland, Oregon, is a historic 1923 building that is listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places. It was converted into apartments in 1938, and in recent years (1982–2014) it was owned by the Oregon Historical Society. This view shows one of two large Richard Haas murals that were painted on two of the building's sides in 1989, giving the flat surfaces a faux three-dimensional appearance–a technique known as trompe l’oiel ('deceive the eye'). The one shown here is on the building's south side. It depicts, on the left, oxen and covered wagons on the Oregon Trail and, on the right, the fur trade and scenes from Native American life.
