English: Robert E. Lee was a U.S. Army Colonel who turned against his oath and served as a leader in the Confederate Army, which waged war against the United States during the Civil War. This statue in Richmond, Va, which honors him, is part of a series of Confederates who are memorialized along Monument Boulevard in Richmond, VA. In June 2020 the Governor of Virginia announced it would be removed. Although the Confederacy fought to defend the institution of slavery and lost the Civil War, Lee, along with 10 other Confederate generals, still have active U.S. Army forts named after them as of 2020.
