Notes Elizabeth Goldring (2005) sets the date of the portrait as 1587/88 based on the inventories of Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester, and suggests that the painting depicts Sir Robert Sidney in mourning for his elder brother, Sir Philip Sidney, with a suggestion of the Battle of Zutphen in the background.[1]
