English: Two mammoth skeletal mounts on exhibit at the French National Museum of Natural History in Paris: a southern mammoth (the big skeleton in the foreground, Mammuthus meridionalis) and a woolly mammoth (the smaller skeleton in the background, Mammuthus primigenius). The big skeleton, the southern mammoth, was found in 1869 in the south of France and is constituted by fully fossilised bone in rock. The smaller one is subfossil bone from a frozen individual found in 1901 in the permafrost of the Lyakhov islands. This skeleton of a frozen woolly mammoth was given in 1912 by the Russian count Alexander Stenbock-Fermor to the Natural History Museum of France and is the only specimen that left Russia before the Russian Revolution broke out in 1917. Some parts of the skin had been preserved and are on exhibit in a nearby display cabinet. After the flesh was ripped off, the skeleton was mounted and exhibited as it is seen here as of 1958.
Français : Deux squelettes de mammouth exposés au Muséum national d'histoire naturelle à Paris: un mammouth méridional (le grand squelette au premier plan, Mammuthus meridionalis) et un mammouth laineux (le squelette plus petit visible au deuxième plan, Mammuthus primigenius). Le plus grand des deux, un spécimen de mammouth méridional surnommé « l'éléphant de Durfort », fut découvert en 1869 dans le sud de la France et est constitué d'os pleinement fossilisés dans la roche. Le plus petit des deux, le mammouth laineux, surnommé « le Mammouth de Lyakhov », est à l'état d'os subfossile et provient d'un individu gelé qui fut découvert en 1901 dans le pergélisol de la plus grande des îles Lyakhov. Ce squelette de mammouth laineux congelé fut offert au Muséum en 1912 par le comte Alexandre de Stenbock-Fermor et fut le seul à avoir quitté la Russie avant la révolution de 1917. Quelques portions de peau ont été conservées et sont exposées dans une vitrine qui se trouve à proximité du squelette. Après avoir été décharné, le squelette fut exposé au public à partir de 1958.
