Summary

Description
English: The Mackenzie delta is an area with thick continuous permafrost. However, unfrozen areas (taliks) may exist below the lakes shown. In the foreground, a small lake has been drained due to erosion (close to the coast). Ice-wedge polygons along contraction cracks slowly develop by the yearly freezing and melting cycles. A slowly growing pingo develops. Photo: Lorenz King, JLU_Giessen.de, August 8,1987
