Summary

Description
English: Women's mummified body. Height around 1.48 m & age between 24 & 26 years. She was found along with two babies & other individuals in her group in the Babylon Cave, at Fazenda de Santana, Municipality of Goiana, in Minas Gerais. The bodies, preserved naturally thanks to the conditions of the cold & dry cave where they were buried, date from approximately 600 years ago, thus preceding the Portuguese' arrival, in Brazil. The children are respectively one month & 1 year old. The bodies were placed on stones, wrapped in baskets, nets, leaves & fibers. Next to them were left objects representative of their culture, such as bags braided in fibers, a hammock, a thick rope & a "cross" of threads, placed on the woman's head. By the analysis of the objects & the place where the group was found, it is believed that they belonged to the Botocudos branch, more specifically to the Maxacali, Kamakan or Makuni ethnic groups. These bodies were donated to Emperor D. Pedro II by Maria José de SAntana, owner of the farm where they were found, where coffee was planted at the time. Today they’re part of the collection of the National Museum of UFRJ, in Rio de Janeiro.
