On 23 March 1907, R 28 was operating the Boat Train between Christchurch and Lyttelton, New Zealand when it over-ran the stop-block on Lyttelton wharf. The driving frame, wheels, and engine fell into the water but as depicted in the picture, the rest of the locomotive stayed on the wharf. |

Under New Zealand law, copyright expires fifty years after the death of the photographer; Godber died in 1949 and thus the photograph entered the public domain in 1999. It is also rare, as few images of the R class exist from this era.
