Summary

Description
English: A dead, hollow, bamboo-like stem section sawn from a cane of Leycesteria formosa, the Pheasant Berry (family: Caprifoliaceae), to make a single pan pipe, which will resonate at various frequencies whenthe open end is blown. The tubular stem was cut just below one node and again just below the next, to yield a tube sealed at one end by the natural septum present at the lower node. This musical effect occurs in nature when the wind blows over broken stems of the plant, creating the eerie piping and whistling sounds which have earned it the name of Guĭ chuī xiāo or "Ghost (-blown) Flute" in its native China.
