First page of a letter sent by George Washington from his headquarters in Newburgh, New York to Major General William Smallwood in Annapolis, Maryland. This letter was written in July 1782 during the American War of Independence. In the letter Washington asks Smallwood for reports of the progress he is making in recruiting troops and how they are being armed and clothed. Smallwood was in charge of the American troops in Annapolis.
