Panneau sculpté d'un piédestal de statues représentant le concours de musique entre le Dieu Apollon et le Satyre Marsyas 330-320 av. J.-C. (période classique) Marbre Mantinée, Arcadie

Ce panneau dans le style de Praxitèle a probablement été réalisé par un de ses élèves.

A droite, le satyre Marsyas jouant de l'aulos (le double hautbois antique) défie musicalement Apollon et sa lyre, assis à gauche. Ce dernier ne le lui pardonnera pas et le fera écorcher vif à l'issue du concours.

Au centre, un personnage tient le couteau qui va servir à exécuter la sentence.

Ce concours est le symbole de la lutte entre les forces apolliniennes (raison, ordre, sons harmonieux attachés à Apollon et à sa lyre) et dionysiennes (nature, excès, sons puissants de l'aulos, lié au culte de Dionysos) qui existent dans l'homme.
