Title
Large silver necklace from the Bedale Hoard, inlaid with gold foil.
Description
Large silver necklace; four individual twisted able strands hammer-welded together into flattened terminals of rectangular section. An s-shaped hook with a scrolled tip is evident at either terminal. The outermost cable consists of six thick, plaited rods and the inner three ‘hollow’ ropes each of three coiled strands of double-twisted rods with plaited ends. A 55mm length of the innermost rope is broken off next to the terminal.
The form appears to represent a unique, ‘West Viking’ variant, although all its various components can be readily paralleled in Viking jewelry.
