Summary

Description
English: Title: Krazy Kat
  • Description: 23-year-old artist Cleon "The Throck" Throckmorton (1897–1965) (middle), fellow artist and fencing champion Kathryn Marie "Kat" Mullin (1902–1994) (right), 26-year-old illustrator Inez Hogan (1895–1973) (top left), and friends enjoy coffee and cigarettes in the external treehouse of Throckmorton's speakeasy, The Krazy Kat, circa 1921. During the Jazz Age, Throckmorton's speakeasy in Washington, D.C. was notorious for its riotous performances of hot jazz music which often degenerated into mayhem. The speakeasy's polysexual and homosexual clientèle became known for their public advocacy of free love ("unrestricted impulse"), and D.C. municipal authorities condemned the venue as a "disorderly house" (a contemporary designation for a brothel). Police raided the establishment many times, and at least one of the raids degenerated into a brawl. Throckmorton, Mullin, Hogan, and their friends were all affiliated with an avante-garde circle of libertine bohemian artists known as the Provincetown Players.
