On 21 February 1879, a violent explosion at the Kaitangata Coal and Railway Company mine within the small town of Kaitangata led to the death of 34 miners. Kaitangata is on the left bank of the Clutha River ten kilometres south east of Balclutha in Otago, New Zealand. The subsequent enquiry into the death of the miners found that conditions in the mine had been poor, with inadequate ventilation, the use of candles in an area known for the build-up of gas and lack of exits.
This record shown here is from the inquest file for William Hodge and 31 others who died. There is a separate inquest file for 2 other miners caught up in the disaster.
