English: Kaibumakie Kesa Box , Kesa box (kaibu makie kesabako). Box in which a kesa brought back from Tang Dynasty China by Kūkai was stored; decorated with a sea motif: marine animals (fish, birds, turtles) in gold and waves in silver maki-e. About ACE900, Heian period, 10th century, before 940 Kesa box; lacquered hinoki wood, maki-e; 7.9 × 39.1 × 11.5 cm. Kyoto, Tō-ji
Français : Boîte, v. 900. Décor en maki-e : animaux marins (poissons, oiseaux, tortues) en or, et vagues en argent. L. 39 cm. Kyoto, Tō-ji. Boîte dans laquelle était entreposé un kesa ayant appartenu au moine Kūkai (774-835 ; période correspondant à l'époque Tang en Chine). Voir aussi :(en) « Maki'e Lacquered Box with Hosoge Flowers and Karyobinga Designs » [1], sur Kyoto National Museum (consulté le 19 janvier 2019) : coffret à sutra, daté 919. Bois laqué à décor de karyobinga et de fleurs hosoge. Le karyôbinga (Kalavingka en sanskrit) serait un oiseau vivant dans les montagnes enneigées ou au paradis, et dont la voix est réputée magnifique, si bien qu'il désignerait également la voix de Bouddha. Ce coffret, si l'on en croit l'inscription portée sur le coffret lui-même, aurait été réalisé pour contenir le texte bouddhiste du Sanjutcho Sasshi, que le moine Kūkai a écrit en Chine sous la dynastie Tang et ramené au Japon, ensuite. Décor en togidashi maki-e sur fond de laque noire.
