Summary

Description
English: 1865 cartoon allegorically portraying the imaginary execution of former Confederate President Jefferson Davis. Davis is shown imprisoned in a birdcage which hangs from a gallows. He is dressed in woman's clothing, a reference to his disguise when captured; he holds a a sour apple, a reference to the popular lyrics sung by U.S. soldiers that they'd "hang Jeff Davis from a sour apple tree". To the left is a large figure of John Brown, rising from his grave in his burial shroud. Brown points an accusing finger at Davis. The implication is that Brown metaphorically will be Davis's executioner; ie the one who kills the Confederate Slavery cause. Below Davis's cage are four African-Americans, representing the freed people formerly held enslaved. They dance for joy and make insulting gestures towards Davis.
