English: Measuring lava at Halema'uma'u, Kilauea in 1917. Left to right, Norton Twigg-Smith, Thomas Jaggar, Lorrin Thurston, Joe Monez, and Alex Lancaster. From USGS archives. Jaggar directed the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory from 1912 to 1940, and Lorrin Thurston organized the overthrow of the Kingdom of Hawaii.
