Summary

Description
English: This huge skull belongs to a mammal-like reptile called Odontocyclops meaning "toothy cyclops" after the one-eyed giants from Gree mythology. While the animal clearly had two normal eyes with which to see, it also had what scientists call a "pineal eye" - a hole in the middle of the forehead. This hole leads directly to the pineal organ in the brain In reptiles, the pineal organ senses changes in temperature and light. This is important because such "cold-blooded" animals cannot control their body temperature from within so they must find other ways to stay warm in winter (eg basking) and cool i nsummer (eg. burrowing). It is likely that the large dicynodonts being so fat with such short legs, were able to keep their core temperature fairly stable so they could have been partially warm blooded
