Summary

Description
English: Info sign at the entrance to the castle and the shrine on the main hill of the Southern Lebanese village of Chamaa (also spelled Chama'a, Chama, or Shama). The shrine is attributed by local tradition to the prophet Shamoun or Shimon al-Safa, who is said to be Saint Simon the Zealot, Simon Peter, or Simon the Cananite, one of the 12 apostles of Jesus. According to this Shia belief, he was also an ancestor to the 12th and last Shia Imam Mahdi. The castle was built in 1116 by the Frankish Crusaders over the remains of Roman-Byzantine buildings and restored in the 18th century by the Shiite dynasty of Ali al-Saghir, but partly destroyed by Israeli attacks in the 2006 war against Hezbollah.
