Understanding the chart

This chart compares the share of pre-tax income obtained by the top 1% of earners in 13 developed countries, for 1980 versus 2000. It excludes capital gains. The U.S. had the largest increase over that period.

This chart was created from source data from Andrew Leigh.[1] A similar chart also appears in the book "Winner Take All Politics" by Jacob Hacker and Paul Pierson. Data was not always available for each country for 1980 and 2000, so the closest available year was taken:

  • Starting year: Netherlands 1981
  • Ending year: France & Germany - 1998; Netherlands-1999; Switzerland-1996.
