The incarceration rate is defined as the total number of inmates held in custody of state or federal prisons or local jails per 100,000 U.S. residents.p16. I made it using data provided by the Bureau of Justice Statistics.

  • For 1985,1990-1999, I used section 6 of Sourcebook of criminal justice statistics 2003 page 488 Table 6.13. The sources for that page are as follows:
