The Igorrote people inhabit the mountainous country of Luzon, the largest island of the Philippines. In 1899, they served as guides for U.S. allies in the war against Philippine independence fighters. The exposition promoted the superiority of American culture by depicting the Igorrotes as savages who indulged in dog-eating and head-hunting. The Lewis and Clark Exposition was hosted by the city of Portland from June 1 to October 15, 1905. Covering over 400 acres, the fair showcased exhibits from various nations and states, and it promoted the economic potential of the Pacific Northwest region.
