Summary

Description
English: This is a freshwater amphipod (/Hylallela azteca/ - Crustacea: Amphipoda) infected with the parasitic acanthocephalan (/Corynosoma constrictum/ - Acanthocephala: Polymorphidae) collected at Crescent Lake National Wildlife Refuge and photographed at Cedar Point Biological Station (University of Nebraska). As adults, these thorny headed worms are parasites of ducks. The eggs are eaten by the amphipods and the worm develops into an infective (orange colored) cystacanth larva. The whole amphipod is then eaten by a duck or other water bird and the worms mature in the small intestine of the definitive host. L. Duclos showed that the orane color is due to carotenes concentrated in the tissues of the cystacanth larva. 27/July/2018.
27/julio/2018.
