DescriptionIBM PS2 MCA Model 55 SX, power supply, memory, riser base.jpg
English: Internal design of the IBM PS/2 Model 55 SX, showing:
the base slot of the riser card that connects interface boards and the hard drive
the 72-pin PS/2 memory SIMMs
the PS/2 power supply
PS/2 SIMMs were unlike other system SIMMs of the period. It was not possible to install generic PC SIMMs in a PS/2, nor to use PS/2 SIMMs in a standard machine. These may have been parity or ECC memory since modules usually had sets of ten chips.
The power supply connects only to the motherboard. No separate cabling is used to supply power to either the hard drive or floppy drive, and all power comes through the drive ribbon cabling. This design made it impossible to substitute generic drive/peripheral components from non-PS/2 computers.
