Description

A Cheumatopsyche sp. (Family Hydropsychidae) larva has climbed out of its retreat after the rock the retreat was attached to was removed from a stream. These stream-dwelling caddisfly larvae build retreats with a large, mesh net made of silk to capture particles (including algae, detritis, and small stream-invertebrates) as they move along with the stream current. This picture was taken from an upstream perspective with respect to the net's opening.
