signed The new lighthouse, designed by Sir James Douglass, can be seen to the right of the older one, built by John Smeaton. Smeaton's lighthouse was taken down and rebuilt on Plymouth Hoe.

The Duke was on board the Galatea. The Government steamships Caron, Trusty, and Harpy, gaily dressed in flags and carrying members of the local authorities were in attendance. The general public were conveyed on the decks of the Sir Francis Drake, the Commerce and the Empress. Read NewspaperArchive
