Description

College Hill is mentioned in Lovecraft's, "The Case of Charles Dexter Ward," "The Haunter of the Dark," and "The Shunned House."

The Providence County Superior Courthouse (1924-33), with Hopkins Street to its right. College Street is on the left, South Main Street is in the foreground, and George Street is in the upper middle of the picture. The clock is on the First Congregational Church (1816) - 301 Benefit Street (and also 1 Benevolent Street).

The Rockefeller Library (1970) - 10 Prospect Street is the large building one block East behind the Providence County Superior Courthouse (1924-33).

The first arch on the South Main Street side of the Courthouse to the left of Hopkins Street is approximately where the Stephen Hopkins House (1743) originally sat on top of a ground-floor set of shops. It was first moved about half a block East up Hopkins Street on the North side, and then moved to its current position in 1928; which is just visible in this photo at 15 Hopkins Street (at Benefit Street) behind the Courthouse.

In the foreground, just to the right of Hopkins Street, along South Main Street, can be seen from left-to-right: 66 South Main Street (1846), 72 South Main Street (1853), the Joseph Brown House (1774) (actually 50 South Main Street), and the Old Stone Bank (1854) (86 South Main Street).

Joseph Brown and Stephen Hopkins are both mentioned in H. P. Lovecraft's, "The Case of Charles Dexter Ward."

The church in the background is the First Congregational Church (1816) - 301 Benefit Street (and also 1 Benevolent Street). In H. P. Lovecraft's, "The Case of Charles Dexter Ward," he says of Joseph Curwen that, "He engaged in shipping enterprises, purchased wharfage near Mile-End Cove, helped rebuild the Great Bridge in 1713, and in 1723 was one of the founders of the Congregational Church on the hill..."

Benefit Street plays a major role in H. P. Lovecraft's "The Shunned House;" and is also mentioned in "The Case of Charles Dexter Ward."

George Street is mentioned in Lovecraft's "The Case of Charles Dexter Ward".

College Street is mentioned in H. P. Lovecraft's, "Call of Cthulhu," and in his, "The Haunter of the Dark." And under its earlier name Presbyterian Lane, it is mentioned in Lovecraft's, "The Case of Charles Dexter Ward," and "The Shunned House."

And South Main Street is also mentioned in Lovecraft's "The Case of Charles Dexter Ward".
