Description AWM Caption : "PORT MELBOURNE, VIC. 1867-11. THE STEAM SLOOP VICTORIA (I) SHOWING HER STARBOARD SIDE WITH THE SHIP DRESSED AND YARDS MANNED IN HONOUR OF THE DUKE OF EDINBURGH, AUSTRALIA'S FIRST ROYAL VISITOR. BUILT FOR THE GOVERNMENT OF THE COLONY OF VICTORIA, VICTORIA (I) WAS THE FIRST WAR VESSEL CONSTRUCTED IN ENGLAND TO THE ORDER OF A BRITISH COLONY. LAUNCHED IN LONDON ON 1855-06-30 THE SHIP REACHED VICTORIA ON 1856-05-31. SHE CARRIED OUT DUTIES IN SEVERAL ROLES IN AUSTRALIAN AND NEW ZEALAND WATERS UNTIL SOLD OUT OF NAVAL SERVICE IN THE LATE 1870S. FROM 1880 THE VESSEL WORKED AS A TENDER AND THEN AS AN EXCURSION STEAMER. VICTORIA (I) WAS FINALLY SOLD IN 1895-08 FOR BREAKING UP. (NAVAL HISTORICAL COLLECTION)".
