William O. Douglas was appointed to the newly-formed Securities and Exchange Commission in 1934. In 1939, Justice Louis Brandeis resigned from the Supreme Court and President Franklin D. Roosevelt appointed Douglas to the bench. With a term lasting 36 years and 209 days, Douglas is the longest-serving justice in the history of the Supreme Court.
On December 31, 1974, Douglas suffered a debilitating stroke which paralyzed his left leg. He resigned from the Supreme Court on November 12, 1975. He died on January 19, 1980 at the age of 81.
