Description |
Nederlands: Op de tiende dag van de maand Muharram in het jaar 61 van de islamitische jaartelling (680 na Christus) stierf Hussein, de zoon van Ali, een tragische dood in de strijd tegen de soennieten. De dood van Hussein werd de belangrijkste gebeurtenis in de sji'ietische geschiedenis. Omdat zijn dood onterecht was, beschouwen sji'ieten hem als een martelaar. Elk jaar herdenken de sji'ieten de dood van Hussein gedurende de eerste tien dagen van Muharram. Deze herdenking wordt Ashura genoemd en bestaat uit processies en rituelen. Het meest indrukwekkende ritueel vindt op de tiende dag plaats. Dan lopen de gelovigen in processies door het dorp of de wijk, terwijl ze al zingend ritmische bewegingen maken en zich met kettingen, touwen of stokken slaan. De rituelen van de processie zelf en de attributen die erbij gebruikt worden staan symbool voor de afschrikwekkende gebeurtenissen op het slagveld van Kerbela, waar Hussein de dood vond. |
