Summary
| Description | Arms of Gascoyne (of Bifrons House, Barking, Essex): Argent, on a pale sable a conger's head erased and erect or charged with an ermine spot (Montague-Smith, P.W. (ed.), Debrett's Peerage, Baronetage, Knightage and Companionage, Kelly's Directories Ltd, Kingston-upon-Thames, 1968, p.987, Marquess of Salisbury). Quartered by Cecil, Marquess of Salisbury. A difference of the arms of Gascoigne of Parlington, Yorkshire, see (w:Gascoigne baronets). James Brownlow William Gascoyne-Cecil, 2nd Marquess of Salisbury (1791-1868), married as his first wife Frances Mary Gascoyne (1802-1839), daughter of Bamber Gascoyne of Childwall Hall, Lancashire, and in 1821 by royal licence assumed the additional surname of Gascoyne. The first prominent member of this Gascoyne family was Sir w:Crisp Gascoyne (1700-1761), of Bifrons House in the parish of Barking in Essex, a wealthy brewer at Houndsditch who became Lord Mayor of London, who married Margaret Bamber, a daughter and co-heiress of Dr. John Bamber (d.1753), MD, of Bifrons House (which he built) in Barking, a wealthy physician.
