Notes

This is one of the water-colour drawings made by Georg Forster during James Cook's second voyage to the Pacific in 1772-1775.

The watercolour is listed by Sharpe 1906, p. 194 and by Lysaght 1959 p. 305 as Plate 143. This is also the number written on the right-hand side of the watercolour. The NHM lists this watercolour as Plate 140.

John Latham based his description of the "New Zealand lark" on Forster's painting.(Latham, 1783, p. 384).

The painting is based of a specimen collected in Queen Charlotte Sound of New Zealand's South Island and is the holotype for the species.(Medway 1976 p. 57)
