Summary

Description The former Temple Beth El at 155 Richmond Avenue, Buffalo, New York, October 2012. The first Jewish congregation in Buffalo, Beth El was founded in 1847, occupying a succession of buildings in what's now the downtown business district until 1911, when the copper-domed building seen in this photograph was dedicated. Henry Osgood Holland was the architect. Beth El moved to the suburb of Amherst in 1966, where after a series of mergers with other congregations it continues to exist under the name Temple Beth Tzedek. After the move, the former Richmond Avenue synagogue was used as home to a number of Christian congregations; at the time this photo was taken, it was Greater Emmanuel Temple Church of God in Christ. Sold later, it's now under renovation as the private residence of Ward Thomas, chief executive officer of Sentient Science, a locally-based technology company.
