Summary

Description
English: Formant plot (w/ Bark normalisation) for monophthong vowels in Singapore English (the FACE and GOAT vowels are excluded), from Deterding (2007:19). /ɛ̝/ (ad-hoc symbol) represents the NEXT vowel (see Singapore English#Next–text split), while [ɔː] and [uː] (in red) are allophones of /ɔː/ and /uː/ in open syllables. The symbol /ɛ̝/ is used here instead of /e/ to represent the NEXT vowel to avoid confusion with [e] (one possible realisation of the FACE vowel in SgE, NEXT and FACE aren't necessarily identical) and /e/ (which is used to represent the DRESS vowel in works that follow British English IPA conventions). All subjects in this study were undergraduate students. If /eɪ/ and /oʊ/ were measured, they would probably be between /ɪ/ and /ɛ̝/, and /ʊ/ and [ɔː] respectively.
