English: (A) is healthy muscle, stained with H&E. (B) (C) and (D) are from FSHD affected muscle. FSHD-affected muscle fibers are noticeably rounded, compared to the polygonal-shaped fibers in (A). Yellow arrow indicates endomysial fibrosis. Asterisk indicates atrophic myofibre. Gray arrow points to perivascular inflammation. Black arrows point to regenerating myofibres, as indicated by the color in (B) and (C), confirmed by stain for myosin heavy chain in (D). Blue arrow points to myofibre undergoing phagocytosis.
