Summary edit

Comparative screenshot of the U.S and Japanese prints of the Fullmetal Alchemist manga, volume 8, 2001, indicating censorship of a crucifix that was in the original material.

Copyright: Hiromu Arakawa (author), Square-Enix (Japanese publisher), Viz Media (United States distributor).

This image is a modification of File:FMA_Japan.jpg and File:FMA_Yankee.jpg, in which the parent images are cropped to only show the crucifix panels, the subject of the page for which the image is intended, and to show them side-by-side.

Fair use rationale for Crucifixion in the arts edit

Though this image is subject to copyright, its use is covered by the U.S. fair use laws because:

  • It illustrates an educational article about the subject matter of the image, specifically, how Japanese popular art depicts crucifixion, and a controversy regarding how these depictions have been altered for distribution in the West.
  • The use of the illustration will not affect the value of the original work or limit the copyright holder's rights or ability to distribute the original. In particular, copies could not be used to make illegal copies of the manga book.
  • It is a low resolution image, and only represents a small proportion of the original property, selected specifically to illustrate the subject matter of the page.
  • It is not replaceable with an uncopyrighted or freely copyrighted image of comparable educational value. All similar images are copyrighted by Japanese companies that do not allow free licensing.
