DescriptionEllicott Creek Trailway - 20230404 - 31 - Trailway and WBFO transmitter tower.jpg
English: A view along the Ellicott Creek Trailway in Amherst, New York on an overcast April 2023 afternoon. In the background at right rises the transmitter tower for radio station WBFO, an NPR member station that was owned and operated by UB until 2011. Though now part of the Buffalo Toronto Public Media family of stations, this field adjacent to the North Campus is still the site of its 417-foot antenna which beams its signal over a roughly 4,650-square-mile area encompassing all of Erie, Niagara, Orleans, and Genesee Counties, the northwestern half of Wyoming County, and the eastern two-thirds of the Niagara Peninsula in neighboring Canada. (Western New York's southerly counties of Chautauqua, Cattaraugus and Allegany are served by repeater stations WUBJ and WOLN, broadcasting from Jamestown and Olean respectively.) Opened to cyclists and pedestrians in 1988, the 4.4-mile original portion of this trail extends in a northwesterly direction from Ellicott Creek Trailway Park on North Forest Road, passing through the North Campus of the University at Buffalo and the sprawling Audubon Industrial Park before ending at Ellicott Creek Park in nearby Tonawanda. A southward extension of the path, leading to the Audubon Recreation Complex on Amherst Manor Road, added 2.2 miles to the total length when it opened in May 2000.
