The effect of using en:polarizer and red filter in black-and-white en:photography. Photographs: Przemyslaw "Blueshade" Idzkiewicz. Both polarizer and red filter resulted in increased contrast between the sky and buildings. However, since the red filter used here was a relatively dense filter, it caused deeper darkening of sky than the polarizer. Additionally, it brightened the shade of the buildings which were flesh-colored, further increasing the contrast between them and the sky. On the other hand, the use of polarizer decreased the amount of reflections in water. The pictures used for this comparison depict one of bays in the town of en:El Gouna, located about 30 km north of en:Hurghada, en:Egypt. Pictures were taken in October, en:2004.
