In a paper read before the British Association, 1869, by Benjamin W. Richardsson, M.D., F.R.S., he says –"The ALCOHOLS are strictly anæsthetics, and indeed the first published case of a surgical operation under anæsthetic sleep by inhalation was performed by Dr. COLLYER, on a person rendered insensible by breathing the fumes of alcohol."
